Concordia Girls Swimming Fast Off the Block Breaking Records

This year’s squad features eight swimmers led by two seniors in Grace Bourque ’24 and Emerson Swanner ’24, who have been with the team for all four of their seasons at Concordia. With a blend of the four main disciplines (freestyle, butterfly, breaststroke, and backstroke), the team of 2 seniors, 3 juniors, 1 sophomore, and 2 freshmen are excited about the year ahead.

In 2021, the Girls team finished 4th in TAPPS 6A State with only 5 swimmers. Bourque and Swanner were members of that team and are looking to get back to a podium finish as a team in their senior campaign.

Last season at the 2023 State Meet, Kat Tilley ’26 finished as a duo State Champ as a freshman by winning both the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle races and also swam the anchor leg in relays for Concordia. Former Texas A&M and University of Arizona swimmer Monica Gumina ’18 holds all four of the Freestyle school records (50, 100, 200, and 500) and Tilley has the skills and ability to track those down in her three remaining years.

Freshman Ella Lee ‘27 is one of the new members to the team to join the splash zone this year who is favored to immediately compete for State medals for Concordia including the 200 Yard Individual Medley and helping with relays. This season, in her first high school meet, she broke the 100 Breaststroke school record (1:12.61) that was set in 2018 by Emma Kiel ‘21. Lee finished over 3 seconds faster with a time of 1:09.44.

Also, in the first face of the year, Concordia’s 200 Medley Relay broke a school record that was set in 2017 by Gumina / Kiel / Kaiti Walko ’19 / Erin Tilley ’21 with a time of 1:55.79. This year’s team, of Swanner / Lee / Bourque / K. Tilley, touched the wall in a time of 1:55.30, narrowly edging the 6-year-old record.

With the depth of the team and leadership from Head Coach Jackie Roszak, multiple entries in different events as well as all three relays will be the key to a successful State Meet finish in February 2024!
