The Concordia Lutheran Crusaders claimed their 2nd state championship in school history on Friday night with a dominating performance over St. Pius X by a score of 70-48. The Crusaders dominated the Panthers the entire game. Midway through the 2nd quarter, the Crusaders led by a score of 29-13 and they would go into the half up 36-23. They would continue to extend their lead throughout the 3rd quarter and go up 43-27 halfway through the 3rd. The Panthers would cut the lead to 11 going into the 4th, but the Crusaders were too much for the Panthers. Their stifling defense and relentless offensive attack kept the Panthers at bay during the 4th quarter. The strong 4th quarter performance led them to their first state title in 30 years. Head Coach, Bill Honeck, led the Crusaders to a 43-1 season and his second championship at Concordia. “Concordia has always been meaningful to my family, to be a member of the first 4 year class to graduate and get that first State Title has always been a fond memory and to have a son on the team and get to experience it as a coach 30 years later is even better” said Coach Honeck.
Coach Honeck would go on to say “As a coach you dream of having a team that plays hard for the right reasons, a team that is unselfish and cares more about winning the game than how many points they have. That is who we were this year the results speak for themselves. This team has put the work in all year long and they are very deserving of a 43-1 record and a State Title.”
Pierce Hellums, Josh Davis and Yosani Clay were named to the TAPPS 6A State All-Tournament team.
