The boys swim team may lack quantity, but they proved last Friday at the Tapp’s division 1 state swimming meet in Mansfield that they have plenty of quality. Despite only having 5 swimmers qualify for the state meet the boys team was able to finish in 3rd place overall marking the 5th consecutive season they finished inside the top 3 in the state.

“From the first event of the meet you could tell today was going to be a good day for our male athletes” Coach Subda said. The boys team (J. Shine, M. Swanner, M. Hevle, E. Kraft) was seeded 5th in the 200yd Medley Relay but managed to drop 3 seconds to finish 2nd with a time of 1:41.36 to Tapp’s swimming powerhouse El Paso Cathedral. The boy’s team was led by Junior Joey Shine who finished 3rd place in the 200yd Individual medley dropping 6 seconds off his seed time (1:55.60) and second place in the 100yd Butterfly with a time of 52.62. Junior Mason Swanner also had a second place finish in the 100yd Breaststroke with a personal best time of 1:00.74. Senior Mason Hevle managed a 4th place finish in the 100yd butterfly with a personal best time of 55.71. The boy’s 200yd Freestyle relay (M.Hevle, W. Kiel, E. Kraft, M. Swanner) finished in 6th place with a time of 1:34.93. The crusader’s most impressive swim came on the last event of the day when the 400yd Freestyle relay (J. Shine, M. Hevle, W. Kiel, M. Swanner) dropped 5 seconds off their seed time at regionals to move up two places to finish 3rd. Coach Subda said “I think we were all really surprised when we saw the psych sheet and realized we had a chance to finish top three this year. We lost some very big parts of our team over the past couple years and we weren’t really expecting to be in the position we were in heading to Mansfield. I told the boys that we could do this but that we didn’t have much, if any room for error. To their credit, they showed up and swam a flawless meet. I didn’t realize it until I was able to look over the results after the meet but they didn’t have one swim where they added time.” Below are the top 10 team finishers for the Boy’s 2018 Tapp’s Division 1 state meet:
