At STATE the Girls Cross Country Team took 8th place of 17 teams. Our goal coming into State was 4th place this year, which is a place Concordia has never finished before. The girls were only a short 22 points away from reaching that goal.
Unfortunately, from 4th place to 8th place, there was a 5 team spread among that small amount. That spread is truly something that does not usually happen in cross country. The girls were only 3 points away from Awty at 7th place, 7 points away from 6th place, and 16 points away from 5th place. If each girl were to beat just one or two more girls throughout the race of 120 runners, the outcome would’ve been completely different. Knowing that every spot matters and being able to push past just one more person at the end of the race, just comes with experience in the sport.
To put their outcome in perspective, last season, the girls team finished 5th overall at State BUT we were a 97 points away from 4th place. We weren’t even close. You can see that this season, even though we finished 8th overall, we were still closer to 4th place then we were last season. This proves that we were a much stronger team this year.
This is very exciting because of the 7 Varsity girls who ran at State, 1 was a freshman, 4 were sophomores, 1 was a Junior, and only 1 was a Senior. We had a very young and inexperienced Varsity team. Two of them had never ran cross country before and four of them had never ran at State before. Therefore, our future looks very promising! One meet does not define how well their season was! Their season was overall a HUGE success, and all these results and personal record times proved that.
