At the end of October, private school Marching Bands, Field Bands, and Drumlines from all over Texas participated in the annual TAPPS Marching & Field Band Championships in Waco, TX.
The Crusaders earned State Runner-Up in both the Tier 1 Field Band and the Tier 2 Drumline competitions. In the Field Band portion, Concordia narrowly missed out on the title finishing only two points behind Lutheran South Academy.
The different tiers are based on number of students in each discipline. Concordia’s Field Band included 49 members and was one of the largest in the event and competed in Tier 1. The tiers for drumline were split into three groups: Tier 1: 16+ members, Tier 2: 11-15, and Tier 3: 1-10. Concordia’s Drumline featured 13 students.
Both CLHS groups earned a division 1 rating from the judges (highest available rating) which means that the points earned will count toward the State Band Championships in April 2023.
Concordia’s Field Band performance was titled “Road Trip – 2022” and included four pieces:
- I’m Shippin’ Up to Boston arr. Paul Murtha/Will App
- Saturday in the Park arr. Paul Murtha
- Viva Las Vegas arr. Ralph Ford
- Take Me Home, Country Roads arr. Matt Conaway/Jack Holt
The Crusader Drumline performance included four pieces:
- Cobra by John R. Hearnes
- Blazed Blues by Joe and Josh Horvath
- Hipster by Chris Crockarell
- Mo Cowbell by John R. Hearnes
In the 2021-2022 school year, Concordia’s Band Program finished as State Champions. Points were earned from Field Band, Handbells, Solos, Large Ensembles, and Small Ensembles. However, in the Fall 2021 Marching & Field Band Championships, Concordia did not earn any points from Drumline since it received a division 2 rating, so the Crusaders are already ahead of pace from their State Championship season last year.
It is a long year of competition and performance pieces and we look forward to hearing the instrumental groups grow throughout the year!
